Mio Frozen Sake

Did you ever drink Slush Puppy when you were a kid? My favorite summer childhood memories are drinking slushies on the beach. How can you not enjoy the cold, slushy texture with psychedelic artificial colours and enough sugar to keep you awake for days?

So you can imagine my excitement when I saw Mio Frozen Sake in my supermarket. A sake slush puppy?! Hell yes. Bring it on.

What is Frozen sake?

Exactly what you think it is. Mio Frozen sake is normal sake but stored in a convenient pouch. It is designed to be frozen at home, then decanted and drunk on a hot day.

Summer in Japan is seriously hot and humid. Even Japanese people struggle to keep cool during July and August. This icy little treat is perfectly refreshing when you need it most. Genius.

“A slushy sake made best to be enjoyed frozen”

Warning! It melts quickly, so freeze your container first or east fast!

How to make frozen sake

It’s so easy! Just pop the pouch in your freezer and wait. The instructions advise about 6 hours should be sufficient. When it’s ready, simply massage the pouch to break up the ice and pour into a glass.

The pouch has a convenient 小さく (small) and 大きく (big) opening to help you pour smoothly into your chosen container. The pouch contains 100ml of sake, so I recommend pouring it into a large glass or small bowl and eating it with a spoon or straw.

Mio Frozen sake review

If you are already familiar with the Mio sake brand, you know its is famous for its smooth, sweet flavour. It has a soft, fruity taste so it’s great for sake beginners. But whether you are a sake newbie or a nihonshu connoisseur, this frozen sake is a divine way to chill in summer. Or anytime really.
